In total, we served over 60 people this week, each of them had a story. It was a wonderful experience and I hope you can join us some time. I will try to post some pictures on the church website of our trip soon.

So our next stop that day was to see Jorge. Jorge was in his mid 20's and was in a tragic car accident. He was in the hospital for 2 months and then released only to find that there were no services or follow up doctor visits, or therapy opportunities for him. He had spent the last 6 months laying in bed, undress, cared for by his mother (who was half his size and weight) and having no hope for the future. Jorge had no control of his arms or legs, but he did have feeling in them, which gives rise to possibilities that therapy could help him regaining some use of his limbs. We had brought a chair to fit Jorge, but the challenge was going to get him in it. First, I had a discussion with the mom and Jorge about getting dressed everyday. It was a determination of the will, it was about respect, honor, a fight that this day will be better than the last. And so momma got him dressed and we proceed to put Jorge in the wheelchair. Sergio (Push's Mexican Director of Distributions), who is in a chair himself, began a conversation with Jorge about the will to live and the fight that he is up against. Sergio found out that Jorge has a 5 year old daughter that his wife left with after the accident. That little girl is now Jorge's reason for the fight. He wants to be able to be a father to his daughter and that means rehabilitating out of the condition he is in. Sergio gave him wise words from experience about the fight that he is up against and word's of encouragement to the future he could have if he fights for it. We picked Jorge up and sat him in his wheelchairs. It was a painful move, vertigo because of blood pressure issues, it was hard, but Sergio kept talking him through the pain. After about 10 minutes he balanced out and regained his composer. We wheeled him out to the patio were we had more room to do adjustments to the chair. As his pale skin soaked up the noon day sun, a smile came onto his face. Hope that things could get better began to penetrate his heart. It was a beautiful sight. BUT then we had to take him back into his room and transfer him back to bed, because his mother had no possible way of doing it by herself. It was heart breaking to take him back to bed, but there was no other option. We promised Jorge that we would return on Saturday with some more equipment to help his mother transfer him to his wheelchair. Back at the Push Warehouse, we had a Hoyer Body lift and sling, instruction booklet on how to use it, and a brand new demonstration video (what are the chances??? Total God thing). Saturday morning we returned to Jorge's house to find Jorge dressed and smiling waiting our visit. We set up the lift and transfered him into the chair, walking mother through the process step by step. It worked, he was in with less pain, less vertigo, a much smother transition that momma can do by her self. We wheeled Jorge out to the patio for some sun. It was a beautiful success. Sylvia had a volunteer doctor coming over at 1:30 that afternoon and so we left Jorge in his wheelchairs on the front porch of his house and instructed him that the Doctor will help momma with the transition back to bed one more time (if she needs it). But he could not spend a couple hours in the sun and dreaming about the future possibilities. As we left, tears rolled down Jorge's face as we drove off. Also we have spoken with a therapist about volunteering some time to work with Jorge at his home, hope to get that worked out with in the next week or so.

Wow! Great week in Mazatlan Mexico. Thought I would share a few quick stories.

On Wednesday we went to Aurora's house to do a home visit. Aurora had diabetes, had lost her sight about 5 years earlier, and also had some major heart issues which has rendered her unable to walk more than a few steps at a time. She has a loving husband as her caretaker. We had already preselected a chair to bring to her and showed up with a small team of people. One member of that team was Sandra. Sandra also had diabetes and had 2 major heart attacks in her life, the only major difference was the basic quality of medical care that they received as treatments for their infirmities. Sandra and Aurora were kindred spirits from when they first began to hear each others stories. That Wednesday was my 35th birthday and we found out that Aurora's 67th birthday was on Friday. So her and I were Birthday buddies. She had her husband go into the bed room and get a giant 4' X 4' Santa clause and Reindeer wall hanging that Aurora had made and she gave it to me as a Birthday gift. It was beautiful hand sown together with shinny beads and bright colors. I asked her, " how did you make this when you can't see?". She said it took her 15 days to make it but with the help of her husband, and a lot of will and determination, she made it. She also had 4 more 3 dimensional reindeer lawn ornaments that she gave to the rest of the team, she was so happy to give us gifts when we came to give her a wheelchair. We passed the hat around the team and left her with a financial donation that we called "seed money" for Aurora to start a business with her craft and to continue to be an active/productive person in her community. When we left Aurora's house amidst the snot and the tears, the hugs and the kisses, we kne that we had been apart of something very special. On Friday Sylvia (Push's Mexican Representative and Coordinator) stop by Aurora's house on her way to meet with my team. She brought Aurora and birthday cake and a balloon. Aurora will never be forgotten.
