Please read this blog post (below).
It's sarcasm/ satire. Obviously Don Miller's plumber isn't named Judas. But I love what he says, in a sideways way. He wrote this post in response to how christians expect christian artists to be "christian" in everything they do, and not 'cross-over' to anything secular. Miller is making a point about how we press artists to constantly write lyrics, paint pictures, and publish books that always at every moment "share the gospel." No room is left in christian art for 'non-spiritual' everyday stories and experiences.

It's the same tragic thing I see with 'evangelism'. Christian culture has pressed people to shove the "gospel message" into every situation with 'unsaved' people at all times. Instead we should be learning to be with people, and listen for when the Spirit is giving a prompt to speak the hope that is within us ... or not. Evangelism is about obedience in the moment, not behavior on a check list.

We've created these big performance expectations for ourselves and other christians about how to act christian instead of how to be human.

But, fact is, sometimes, we have to show up and just 'fix the pipes.' And that's ok.

Give it a look... hit the link.

I remember back in high school when Christian rock was still in it's infancy, many people in my church expected Christian bands and singers to always sing the gospel and do "gospelly" things all the time.
I struggled with this for a long time, trying to believe as they did to fit in and not look ungospelly myself but I couldn't ignore the fact that my own life was usually just filled with...life.
I think maybe some of that stems from reading about Jesus in the bible. We don't get a lot of day to day conversations and tedious tasks but instead we get the highlights of His ministry and we think that's all there was. But He was a carpenter and spent countless hours learning that and then doing that. I don't think he made wooden crosses to give away as gifts to evangelize but he made furniture to sell.
Pastors must struggle with this very same thing. People must expect them to pray over their choice of bread in the supermarket or sing a hymn while pumping gas. As an ex-roofer I'm glad no one expects much of me.
You are totally right about the biblical emphasis on the big highlights of Jesus life ... and not the everyday carpentry. Clearly that was a big part of his life, too. It's easy to miss. And, that's so true about what he built -- practical furniture, not miniature crosses. Hmmmm. Makes me think.

For the record, "singing hymns while pumping gas" made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that!
