Luke 12:34 Says "...store up for yourself treasures in heaven for where your treasure is your heart will be also"
I have two questions: 1). What is my treasure and 2) where do I store it? - In heaven or somewhere else? Where ever it is - that is where my heart is going to be. So where is it? What is it? Intellectually I know that my treasure is not here in this world -or is it?
Some thoughts on what treasure is:
1. My inheritance from the Lord - Home.
2. Freedom in Christ - I am ransomed
3. My Children "...are in inheritance from the Lord"
4. Rewarded at home "...according to what I have done"
5.Is it the Holy Spirit the counselor in me as "...a deposit"? - I think I might be onto something here.
So then where is my heart? Where should it be?
-Work? I strive alot but I don't think I consider it treasure...Is striving my heart?
-Family? I care much for them they are a pulse in my life
-Home? Where I am ultimately trying to get to?
Truth is - I don't know the answer to these questions right now. But I asked today. "God..where is my heart?" - He'll tell me. I think I know where my treasure is -really (though I think I forget sometimes). I think it is in the conversations with him, the walking with him, the surprise moments of spontaneous worship - the knowing he's alive and active...I think that's it.
Here is my reasoning about treasure. Treasure consists of things that are beautiful and in short supply right? Like jewels or gold. In heaven material things will be beautiful, but not in short supply, in fact one could argue that we will want for nothing. So, what is in short supply in the heavenly realms that is also beautiful? Living by faith. Acts of faith. Faith units, you might say. You see this throughout revelation, the golden bowls full of prayers of the saints (prayer is an expression of faith and dependence), we worship the Lamb who chose to live obediently and was slain, the martyrs are honored for their great faith to follow God even unto death despite their sight. Living by faith is beautiful and is in short supply in the heavenly realms.
This also explains why God is so often secretive, why his miracles are only seen by a few, why he does not go crashing around the planet fixing things. If he did, he would rob us of our ability to live by faith. Everyone would see his works and be compelled to worship him without much of a choice.
We have an opportunity to live by a standard not by sight. In fact often contrary to sight. We pray, take obedient steps, learn to hear the shepherd's voice so that we live by a different standard. When we do these things we "store up treasures in heaven". We will have an offering to bring to the king. We will be "rich in faith". Our heart will be there, because we long to give Jesus the precious gift of our faith.
The more I ruminate on this idea the more it shifts my thinking toward every opportunity to follow Jesus, is an opportunity to risk, live by faith, step out, bank a treasure. I can almost feel the missed opportunities when I live by sight instead of by faith.
